DAY IN THE LIFE TRILOGY
Role: Writer, Editor and Producer
Timeline: 2020
Method: Web series
Location: Montreal, Canada
A set of mockumentary-style YouTube videos commenting on the absurdity of hustle culture.
Presented through the popular “a day in the life” Youtube vlogging format, these videos highlight what it truly felt like for me to be a student in 2020.
MY JOURNEY
When the world stopped in 2020, students were inevitably required to study at home. I felt frustrated with the disconnect and the uncertainty that came with the new adjustments. This resulted in a complete loss of motivation and sense of direction in my life.
I took it upon myself to find ways to connect with students who shared my worries and frustrations by making partly comedic and partly informative videos about what it felt like to be a student in 2020. Essentially, I talked about self-improvement and discipline through an honest and absurdist approach.
That meant showing the vulnerabilities and insecurities that came with my rejection from the university I initially wanted to go to in “Rejected from my Dream School,” to documenting the days when a week in my semester was not going well in “A Week in the Life of a Concordia University Student Online”, to blurring the lines between reality and delusion with these new adjustments in “Prepping for College Final Exams.”
I call this project the “Day in the Life Vlogs” Trilogy because they were made in the style of the popular “a day in the life” youtube vlog format. But, I added my own twist to it—At the time, Youtubers often highlighted a “hustle culture” mentality in their videos, but I wanted to present something less idealistic and more grounded in reality.
